Tuberculoza a fost depistata si la mumiile egiptene. Ftizia a fost considerata intotdeauna o boala grava, de cele mai multe ori cauza de deces.
In trecut, lupta cu boala se ducea cu odihna, hrana buna, cura sanatoriala la munte. Descoperirea medicamentelor antituberculoase a schimbat radical evolutia bolii, care a devenit o simpla boala infectioasa vindecabila. Din pacate, mentalitatea ca este o boala rusinoasa si teama de fosta boala fatala s-au pastrat si astazi.
Robert Koch a descoperit bacilul care-i poarta numele la 24 martie 1882. De aceea, in fiecare an, data de 24 martie este dedicata Zilei Mondiale a Tuberculozei.
